Founded in 1976 by brothers Waleed and Malik Ali, the MPI Media Group has grown into one of the largest and most successful independent producers and distributors of movies, home video and music in the world. Today, the multi-million dollar company has amassed a library of 15,000 hours of footage and the rights to some of the greatest video, film and music recordings in history. The MPI Media Group is comprised of MPI Home Video, MPI Telemedia and the WPA Film Library. Headquartered in Chicago, the company operates from a 42,000 square foot facility in Orland Park, IL.

 

MPI Home Video


MPI Home Video has well over 2000 home video titles in its collection, including some of the world’s most popular documentaries, movies and television programs. Some of the titles represented by MPI Home Video are Richard Pryor’s Live! In Concert and Live & Smokin’, The George Carlin Collection, Completely Carlin, The Honeymooners “Lost Episodes,”The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The History of the 20th Century and the visually stunning 70 mm documentary Baraka. Upcoming releases from MPI Home Video include the 14 Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, digitally restored to original condition by the UCLA Film and Television Archive.

Additionally, MPI Home Video offers many horror and cult favorites on home video such as the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Dan Curtis Macabre Collection and the 1960s spooky soap opera Dark Shadows, television’s most enduring daytime drama.

The company has also represented the Beatles’ movies A Hard Day’s Night, Magical Mystery Tour, Help!, The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit and You Can’t Do That: The Making of A Hard Day’s Night.  MPI Home Video owns the rights to film held by the estates of Jackie Gleason, John Wayne and the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., among others. The company has also released many music titles including the variety shows Hullabaloo and Music Scene, and John Wayne’s popular patriotic singing debut America – Why I Love Her.

 

Dark Sky Films
 

In spring of 2005, MPI Media Group launched Dark Sky Films, a new label that representing a variety of domestic and foreign horror, sci-fi and film noir, dating from the 1950s to the present. Our first release under this label was the 2004 feature film The Manson Family, followed by lost film noir Without Warning, the German comedy-thriller The College Girl Murders, and the special edition 2-DVD release of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, with extensive bonus materials.
 

MPI Telemedia


MPI Telemedia is a wholly owned subsidiary and the production and creative hub of the MPI Media Group. Its primary mission is to create original documentary programming for distribution in broadcast/cable venues as well as in the home video and educational markets. The company hosts a state-of-the-art post-production facility and unparalleled access to the WPA Film Library.
 

WPA Film Library


The WPA Film Library is another wholly owned subsidiary of the MPI Media Group. Started in 1987 and acquired by MPI in 1989, WPA is a leading commercial film library, holding one of the largest collections of vintage and contemporary footage in the world. Footage from The WPA Film Library is prominently featured in television programs, movies, advertisements and multi-media programs. Imagery from WPA has been used in the Hollywood filmsContact, Mimic and L.A. Confidential, to name a few. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno builds special comedy segments around WPA’s wacky color footage from the 1950’s and WPA’s historical footage has been featured in projects like The History of Rock and Roll, The Trivial Pursuit Multimedia CD-Rom and national advertising campaigns for Budweiser beer and Subway sandwiches.
